Pelaser Oy, based in Kuortti, has introduced the German-Polish Eckert COMBO waterjet and plasma cutting combination machine as the first machine of its kind on the Finnish market, imported by Fredko. With the new combination machine, Pelaser can offer fast and high-quality cutting of thicknesses exceeding the capacity of its current laser machines, as well as waterjet cutting in particular for other materials such as rubber, plastics, glass and even wood materials.
Eckert COMBO combination machine
The experience gained from more than 2,000 manufactured cutting machines culminates in Eckert’s COMBO combination machine, which brings together the best features of waterjet cutting and plasma cutting in one package. Eckert has patented the use of both waterjet cutting and plasma cutting on the same workpiece with one machine. This means that the same combination machine can be used, for example, to cut precise holes or openings in the workpiece with the waterjet cutting head, while the plasma head can be used for the outer contours of the part or similar features where the tolerance requirements are suitable for plasma technology.
With this type of combined cutting, part times can be up to 80 percent faster and productivity higher than when machining with waterjet technology alone. On the other hand, the waterjet cutting head enables more versatile and more accurate cutting than a plasma head alone. The combination machine uses a waterjet cutting basin with an automatic water level control mechanism, enabling cutting either below the water surface or on a dry surface. This means that no extraction or filter system is required for plasma cutting.
In addition, the cutting table is equipped with an automatic cutting waste removal conveyor, which makes machine maintenance easier. For underwater plasma cutting, a Victor power source is used, whose efficiency and quality are, according to Eckert, the best for this purpose. The high-pressure pump has been manufactured by UHDE, part of the German Thyssen Group. The maximum sheet size that Pelaser’s COMBO can cut is 2000 × 4000 mm, and the thicknesses are, for example, 150 mm for steel with waterjet cutting and 50 mm for piercing with plasma.

Pelaser grows steadily and networks
Founded in 2007, Pelaser Oy is a steadily growing family business. With two laser machines, the company cuts even thick materials quickly and with high quality. With its wide selection of press brake tooling, Pelaser is able to bend even complex parts. In addition, close cooperation in press brake bending is carried out with neighbouring Pro Särmäys.
The weldable materials are steel, stainless steel and aluminium. For welding, two welding robots are in use. Since spring 2012, Pelaser Oy has been a shareholder in Mittametalli Oy, a manufacturer of furniture and structures, which uses, among other equipment, Finland’s first Adige fiber tube laser. Through this, Pelaser offers high-quality laser-cut tube components. Close cooperation has also been built with Metallituote Summanen from Lahti in the further processing of tube applications. Eckert’s COMBO combination machine was placed in the new factory extension in Kuortti.
